■Types of gears

Gears include spur gears, helical gears, bevel gears, rack and pinions, worm gears, and planetary gear mechanisms.

<Pinion gear>

A pinion gear is the smaller of the gears that mesh. The gear on the driving side is sometimes called a pinion gear. (Because there are many opportunities to connect to a reducer with a larger number of teeth)

<Drive gear>

Drive gear refers to the driving gear among the meshing gears. The gear on the driven side is called a driven gear.

<Counter gear>

A counter gear is the reverse side of the gears that mesh. As shown below, the wording changes depending on the role and operation of the gear.

■Difference between gear and spline

Both gears and splines are designed to transmit torque and have grooves on their outer peripheries. The difference is that a spline is a mechanism in which grooves are cut into the shaft as shown below, and all the grooves are used to mesh together. Therefore, it is not possible to increase or decrease torque by combining teeth with different numbers of teeth like a gear.
