■What is BSFC?

BSFC (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption) is the net fuel consumption rate, which is the amount of fuel required for an engine to produce a unit amount of energy, and is expressed in g/kwh. The smaller this value, the more fuel-efficient the engine is.

BSFC can be expressed as contour lines with engine speed and torque as shown below, which allows you to visually see which area is most efficient. In many cases, the most efficient area is at medium speed and medium load.

Alternatively, it can be expressed as a graph of BSFC against engine speed, as shown below. Mazda's SKYACTIV-X engine, which is said to have good thermal efficiency, is in the best area at about 200g/kwh.
