Excel does not have a function to combine or cut shapes, so this article explains how to make objects appear to be combined or cut by adjusting the way you draw them in Excel. PowerPoint does have a function to combine shapes, so you can also edit shapes in PowerPoint and paste them into Excel, but this article explains a way to do this without using PowerPoint.

■Shape Overlay

It is a good idea to layer an unfilled shape of the same size on top of a frameless shape.

■Merge shapes

Make the border of an unfilled shape thicker and then overlay a borderless shape of the same size on top of it.
